Why am I Anticipating It?

Because I really like the direction Francis Ford Coppola has taken with his films as of late. He’s making movies for no other reason than because they are stories he wants to tell. He has the money. He’s distributing them himself. And if Twixt (previously known as Twixt Now and Sunrise) is anywhere near the quality of Tetro then sign me up. I also like the statement that came regarding the film in a recent email:

Like his most recent films, Twixt follows three self-imposed mandates that Coppola requires in all of his new work: be his own original story and screenplay, have some personal element, and be self-financed. This particular story came to Coppola during a vivid dream he had while on a trip to Istanbul and is inspired by the writings of Edgar Allen Poe and Nathaniel Hawthorne. The film also brings Coppola back to his horror roots that began during his apprenticeship with Roger Corman.

Who’s In It?

Val Kilmer, Bruce Dern, Elle Fanning and Ben Chaplin

Who Directed It?

Francis Ford Coppola (The Godfather, Tetro)

What’s It About?

A writer with a declining career arrives in a small town as part of his book tour and gets caught up in a murder mystery involving a young girl. That night in a dream, he is approached by a mysterious young ghost named V. He’s unsure of her connection to the murder in the town, but is grateful for the story being handed to him. Ultimately he is led to the truth of the story, surprised to find that the ending has more to do with his own life than he could ever have anticipated.

When Does It Come Out?

Later this year and hopefully at one of the upcoming film festivals. Coppola debuted Tetro at the Cannes Film Festival in 2009 so I wouldn’t be surprised to see this one in Venice or Toronto.

Why am I Anticipating It?

Because I’ve heard good things from people I trust. Plus, it seems Paramount doesn’t know what to do with it, which tells me they can’t figure out how to market a good movie to general audiences, which may not be encouraging for its box-office prospects, but when a good film confuses a major studio it usually means we are in for a treat.

Who’s In It?

Anton Yelchin, Felicity Jones and Jennifer Lawrence

Who Directed It?

Drake Doremus (Douchebag)

What’s It About?

A British college student falls for an American student, only to be separated from him when she’s banned from the U.S. after overstaying her visa.

Why am I Anticipating It?

Because Michael Haneke frequently delivers the goods.

Who’s In It?

Isabelle Huppert, Jean-Louis Trintignant and Emmanuelle Riva

Who Directed It?

Michael Haneke (Cache, The White Ribbon)

What’s It About?

Centers on cultured octogenarians Georges (Trintignant) and Anne (Riva), who are retired music teachers. Their daughter (Huppert), also a musician, lives abroad with her family. One day, Anne suffers a minor stroke. When she leaves the hospital and returns home, she is paralyzed down one side. The love that binds this old couple will really be put to the test.

When Does It Come Out?

No idea. This is a film that stood a chance at premiering at Cannes this year and now all eyes have turned to Venice. However, it is entirely likely it won’t premiere until Cannes 2012, but I’m keeping my hopes up.
