Marisa Tomei is the top choice to play Aunt May

UPDATE: THR reports that Tomei could also cameo as Aunt May in next year’s Captain America: Civil War before the 2017 Spider-Man. Check back here for more details as we learn them. The original story follows:

Variety reports that Academy Award winner Marisa Tomei (My Cousin Vinny, The Wrestler) is the top choice by Marvel Studios and Sony to play Aunt May in their upcoming reboot of Spider-Man. The outlet reveals that an offer was made to Tomei last week but that she has yet to officially sign on. They also reveal that Marvel and Sony are hoping to round out the cast for the film, in order to craft a solid shooting schedule, before officially hiring a writer for the project.

“It’s the soap opera in high school, and those supporting characters, that are interesting,” Feige previously said about the film. “Just as we hadn’t seen a heist movie in a long time, or a shrinking movie in a long time, we haven’t seen a John Hughes movie in a long time. Not that we can make a John Hughes movie – only John Hughes could – but we’re inspired by him, and merging that with the superhero genre in a way we haven’t done before excites us.”

Tom Holland (The ImpossibleIn the Heart of the Sea) will play Peter Parker/Spider-Man in the next Spider-Man film, but he will make his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in next year’s Captain America: Civil War, set for release on May 6, 2016. Jon Watts (Cop Car) is set to direct he film, which is scheduled to hit theaters on July 28. 2017.

Sony Pictures will finance and release worldwide the next installment of the $4 billion Spider-Man franchise, in a film co-produced by Kevin Feige and his expert team at Marvel and Amy Pascal, who oversaw the franchise launch for the studio 13 years ago.
