Illumination/Universal’s Despicable Me 4 earned an impressive $75 million over its first three days, resulting in a $122.6M 5-day domestic bow, per Deadline. That number exceeded early expectations, which projected closer to $100M. However, a massive $27M Friday and $26.8M Saturday put all projections in the rearview mirror. Despicable Me 4 is second in the franchise regarding 3-day openings, behind only Despicable Me 2’s $83.5M, but fourth overall if you include the Minions spinoffs.
The animated sequel has collected $230M worldwide following a staggered release in 52 international markets. Imax accounted for $9.6M in 50 markets through the holiday weekend, raising its total to $10.1M.
Inside Out 2, meanwhile, dropped to No. 2 but continues to rake in big bucks, adding another $33.1M (-42%) to its massive domestic haul. The sequel has earned $536.9M domestically and $1.217B worldwide. Domestically, it needs around $75M to top Incredibles 2 ($608.5M) and just $30M to become the studio’s No. 1 highest-grossing release.
A Quiet Place: Day One dipped 60% in Week 2, earning $21M and raising its domestic cume to $94.3M, while Kevin Costner’s Horizon moseyed its way to $22.1M.
Elsewhere, the Ti West/Mia Goth horror flick MaXXXine enjoyed the biggest “X Series” opening, slashing its way to $6.7M. Audiences awarded the threequel a B.
Finally, Angel Studios’ Sound of Hope: The Story of Possum Trot opened in 2,250 locations, earning $3.2M over the 3-day weekend and $6.79M over the 4-day weekend.
This weekend sees the release of the romantic comedy Fly Me to the Moon, starring Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum, the horror picture Longlegs, starring Taika Monroe and Nicolas Cage, and the re-release of Disney’s animated The Lion King.
