Chris Pratt says that The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 could kickstart the Nintendo Cinematic Universe.
Speaking with ScreenRant, Pratt discussed what the future may have in store for The Super Mario Bros. film franchise following the 2023 animated movie.
“Oh, man! There’s so much to explore,” Pratt said. “There are decades worth of [games] to explore, not only with Mario and Peach and Donkey Kong and Luigi and Bowser and Yoshi; that was teased at the end. But it just gets me so excited. I was such a Nintendo head growing up, so just thinking about how everything from Legend of Zelda to the entire Nintendo Cinematic Universe could be created and what that could look like for all of these characters that I love? I mean, there’s really no limit. We could talk about it for hours.”
Another Super Mario Bros. Movie is in the works
A new Super Mario Bros. Movie is currently scheduled to release on April 3, 2026; however, it is not yet known whether the film will serve as a direct sequel or a spin-off to the 2023 movie. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes director Wes Ball is also working on a live-action Legend of Zelda movie, which does not have an official release date at this time.
Of course, when it comes to Nintendo video games, characters like Mario, Link, and Mega Man all meet in the popular Super Smash Bros. crossover platformer, though whether or not that’s the direction the Nintendo Cinematic Universe could be headed in remains to be seen.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie was released in United States theaters in April 2023. Despite mixed reviews from critics, it made over $1.3 billion at the worldwide box office off of an estimated budget of $100 million.
The voice cast for The Super Mario Bros. Movie includes Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, and Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong. The film was directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie is currently streaming on Netflix.
