The Fall Guy‘s box office did not climb as high as its early estimates suggested. Its move from March to May to kick off the summer movie season did not work as well as the studio expected. Despite a remarkable critical reception, it fell flat and failed to meet expectations at the domestic box office.
The Fall Guy underperforms at the summer box office opening
The Fall Guy collected $10.49 million on its opening Friday at the domestic box office. It added $10.25 million on Saturday, and just $7.76 million on Sunday while playing in 4,002 theaters across North America.
As per Deadline, the domestic total only amounted to $28.5 million on the opening weekend, while the film added another $36.9 million internationally to bring its global opening to $65.4 million. The movie was expected to make between $30-40 million domestically, but couldn’t meet the minimum projections.
It did not compete with any other big-budget outings, but lost a substantial audience to Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace. Disney re-released the film to celebrate its 25th anniversary, and it surprised many by bringing in $8.1 million. Meanwhile, Challengers, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, and other films also posted strong numbers.
What was The Fall Guy’s budget?
Produced on a $130 million budget, The Fall Guy reportedly spent an additional $100 million on marketing. With upcoming summer movies, including Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, IF, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, and The Garfield Movie, among others, The Fall Guy could find it tough to make back its $230 million after its slow start.
But the film can do well on digital and streaming after getting great critics and audience scores on Rotten Tomatoes, and a strong CinemaScore of A-.
Playing in theaters, The Fall Guy stars Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt in the roles of Colt Seavers and Jody Moreno, respectively. It also features Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Winston Duke, Hannah Waddingham, and Stephanie Hsu, among others.
