Francis Ford Coppola says that Megalopolis won’t be his final film.
Speaking with Deadline, Coppola confirmed that he intends to make another movie after Megalopolis.
“One way I knew Megalopolis was finished is that I’ve begun work on a new film,” he said. “It won’t be cheap by any means, but I don’t know if it can be called ‘an epic film.’”
Coppola made his feature film directorial debut in 1963 with Dementia 13. He went on to direct 1972’s The Godfather, 1974’s The Godfather Part II, 1979’s Apocalypse Now, 1983’s The Outsiders, 1990’s The Godfather Part III, and 1992’s Bram Stoker’s Dracula, among other titles. Prior to Megalopolis, his most recent film was 2011’s Twixt.
What do we know about Megalopolis?
“In New York, a woman, Julia Cicero, is divided between loyalties to her father, Frank, who has a classical view of society, and her architect lover, Caesar, who is more progressive and ready for the future,” the synopsis for the movie reads. “He wants to rebuild New York City as a utopia following a devastating disaster.”
Megalopolis stars Adam Driver, who previously described the film as “kind of undefinable” when speaking with The Face earlier this month. “There’s not a lot of precedent for it and it’s wild on a big scale, which is what’s really unique about it,” Driver added.
Regarding his character, Caesar, Driver said, “He’s a visionary. He’s very much Francis [Ford Coppola], in a way, where he’s investigated every way of how people can do something and is trying not to get stuck on the right answer. That’s an idea that’s moving to me — and one that reflects Francis.”
The film also stars Nathalie Emmanuel, Giancarlo Esposito, Jon Voight, Laurence Fishburne, Aubrey Plaza, Jason Schwartzman, Shia LaBeouf, Dustin Hoffman, and more.
Megalopolis does not yet have a release date but is expected to come out in late 2024.
