Alex Garland’s Civil War is currently tacking to be A24’s biggest opening weekend at the box office ever.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Civil War is currently expected to make between $18 million to $24 million at the box office when it opens in theaters in April 2024.
To date, Ari Aster’s Hereditary has the highest opening for A24, as the horror movie brought in $13.6 million at the box office during its first weekend. Aster’s Midsommar also had an impressive opening weekend at $10.9 million, while 2023’s Talk to Me trailed slightly behind at $10.4 million.
Box Office Pro, meanwhile, currently predicts Civil War will make $12 million to $18 million during its opening weekend, with a domestic total range between $35 million to $65 million.
Civil War is also the most expensive movie that A24 has made to date, as the film had a budget of approximately $50 million.
What is Alex Garland’s Civil War about?
“From filmmaker Alex Garland comes a journey across a dystopian future America, following a team of military-embedded journalists as they race against time to reach DC before rebel factions descend upon the White House,” the synopsis for the film reads.
The movie stars Kirsten Dunst, Wagner Moura, Cailee Spaeny, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Sonoya Mizuno, Nick Offerman, Jefferson White, Juani Feliz, Nelson Lee, Edmund Donovan, Karl Glusman, Jin Ha, Jojo T. Gibbs, Jesse Plemons, and Jess Matney.
In addition to directing the movie, Garland also wrote the screenplay for Civil War. Garland previously made 2014’s Ex Machina, 2018’s Annihilation, and 2022’s Men, all of which were released through A24.
Having held its world premiere at South by Southwest in March 2024 (where it received mostly positive reviews), Civil War releases in United States theaters on April 12, 2024, from A24.
