Bill Hader has reportedly been tapped to voice the Cat in the Hat in a new animated movie coming in 2025.
According to Jeff Sneider’s The InSneider, Hader will voice the titular Dr. Seuss character in a new Cat in the Hat movie from Warner Bros. Animation. Erica Rivinoja and Alessandro Carloni are expected to co-direct the film, while the screenplay is being written by Rivinoja and Caroline Williams.
Hader briefly played the Cat in the Hat in a 2014 Saturday Night Live skit that also starred Aidy Bryant and Pete Davidson.
Hader is also known for co-creating and starring in HBO’s Barry, which ran for four seasons. He’s starred in a number of comedies, including 2007’s Hot Rod and 2015’s Trainwreck, while he also played an adult Richie Tozier in 2019’s It Chapter Two.
In the world of animation, Hader has voiced characters in the Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs films, 2009’s Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs, 2013’s Monsters University, 2015’s Inside Out, 2016’s The Angry Birds Movie, 2019’s Toy Story 4, and more.
Other animated Dr. Seuss movies may be in the works
In October 2020, Warner Animation Group and Dr. Seuss Enterprises announced they were partnering together to create a number of projects based on Dr. Seuss books, including The Cat in the Hat, a spin-off centered on Thing One and Thing Two, and Oh, The Places You’ll Go. There’s been little news about the latter two projects since the announcement, as Sneider reports it’s currently unclear if they’re still in the works.
The Cat in the Hat, which was published in 1957, was previously turned into a live-action film in 2003. Directed by Bo Welch, the movie starred Mike Myers, Alec Baldwin, Kelly Preston, Dakota Fanning, Spencer Breslin, Amy Hill, and Sean Hayes.
The new animated Cat in the Hat movie is expected to be released in 2025.
