Christopher Nolan is at the top of the world after Oppenheimer won Best Director and Best Picture at the 2024 Oscars. Now with Oppenheimer in the rearview, all eyes are on what the British auteur will do next. According to a report from Variety, Nolan is weighing two options for his next movie.
One possibility is a remake of The Prisoner, Patrick McGoohan’s mystery-thriller TV series from the 1960s. Nolan was attached to the project in 2009, but nothing ever came of it. The Prisoner became an AMC television series later that year without Nolan’s involvement.
With awards season over, the second route Nolan may go down is to write a new screenplay. Whether he chooses to adapt The Prisoner or write a new screenplay, Nolan has begun planning for life after Oppenheimer. Matthew Belloni wrote in his Puck newsletter that Nolan has started writing his next film.
How Much Did Christopher Nolan Make on Oppenheimer?
Oppenheimer not only resulted in Nolan’s first Oscar wins, but it led to a huge payday for the director. Variety reports that Nolan’s final payday for Oppenheimer is “is just south of $100 million.” That nine-digit figure takes into account “salary, backend compensation, box-office escalators, and a bonus for his twin Academy Awards.”
In total, Oppenheimer won seven Oscars: Best Picture, Best Director for Nolan, Best Actor for Cillian Murphy, Best Supporting Actor for Robert Downey Jr., Best Film Editing, Best Cinematography, and Best Original Score.
