At the 91st Academy Awards, the animated superhero film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse won Best Animated Feature. This year, however, its sequel Across the Spider-Verse lost that honor to The Boy and the Heron. Shameik Moore, who plays Miles Morales, got backlash from social media users after saying his movie got “robbed” of an Oscar and issued an apology right after.
Across the Spider-Verse may not have won Best Animated Feature, but it still set out accomplishments of its own. It was the sixth highest-grossing film of 2023 and had the second-biggest Thursday opening in franchise history. However, the animated film’s lead voice actor Shameik Moore didn’t take the Oscars loss well. Moore wrote in an X post his negative reaction to his movie losing to The Boy and the Heron in one word.
Many fans didn’t respond to Shameik Moore’s reaction lightly. Based on the comments, many felt the Oscar-winning film’s director Hayao Miyazaki was worthy of the honor and to “respect the GOAT.” Even another X user created a poll in the comments, with 81.4% believing Across the Spider-Verse wasn’t robbed.
About 26 minutes later, Shameik Moore wrote a follow-up post admitting himself to be “a sore loser.”
“Respect to the winners. It’s true, I’m definitely a sore loser, but we didn’t lose, Spiderverse has impacted ALOT of lives, we may not have been acknowledged tonight but life goes on, and BEYOND….. yea get ready.”
It’s true that losing an award doesn’t match a movie’s success. As Across the Spider-Verse surpassed its predecessor at the box office, making $690 million worldwide, it doesn’t sound like a losing film to me.
What Other Accolades Did Across the Spider-Verse Win?
Across the Spider-Verse didn’t go home with an Oscar this year, but they had plenty of other wins. For example, they won seven Annie Awards, which is like the Oscars for animated films. It also won Best Animated Feature at the Critics’ Choice Awards. Not to mention, the American Film Institute named Across the Spider-Verse one of the ten best films of 2023.
If you couldn’t get enough of Miles Morales and the rest of the Spider-People, a third and final movie of the franchise is in development. While Beyond the Spider-Verse’s original release date was March 29, 2024, production stalled due to the SAG-AFTRA Strike.
While you wait for a release date, you can find the Oscar-nominated film Across the Spider-Verse on Netflix.
