What do we know about Moana 2?
Announced by Walt Disney Company Chief Executive Officer Bob Iger, Moana 2 will be released in United States theaters this November.
“Walt Disney Animation Studios’ epic animated musical Moana 2 takes audiences on an expansive new voyage with Moana, Maui, and a brand-new crew of unlikely seafarers,” reads the film’s synopsis. “After receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she’s ever faced.”
Deadline reports that Dwayne Johnson, who voiced the demigod Maui, is also “clearly coming back” for Moana 2. The movie is being directed by Dave Derrick Jr.
“It feels like the Moana universe is expanding, and I love that,” Cravalho recently told Variety about the upcoming sequel and franchise. “I love that Moana is a hero to all. It changed what it meant to be a Disney princess. You can be strong and brave and stand up against a demigod. It feels really good that more and more generations are going to be able to relate to this character.”
At the same time, a live-action Moana movie is in the works. Cravalho is executive producing the movie, while Johnson will once again reprise his role as Maui. The movie, directed by Thomas Kail, is currently set to release on June 2, 2025.
Moana 2 releases on November 27, 2024. The 2016 Moana movie, meanwhile, is currently streaming on Disney+.
