Disney has released the first Moana 2 teaser trailer for the sequel to the beloved 2016 Walt Disney Animation Studios movie.
Walt Disney Company Chief Executive Officer Bob Iger announced that Moana 2 is now in the works. A teaser trailer was also revealed, showing Moana on the beach with a seashell. The sequel is set to release in theaters on Wednesday, November 27, 2024.
The Hollywood Reporter’s Borys Kit revealed that Lin-Manuel Miranda is not returning for the soundtrack, with the music now being done by Abigail Barlow, Emily Bear, and the returning duo of Opetaia Foa’i and Mark Mancina.
“Moana remains an incredibly popular franchise,” Iger stated. “And we can’t wait to give you more of Moana and Maui when Moana 2 comes to theaters this November.”

“Walt Disney Animation Studios’ epic animated musical Moana 2 takes audiences on an expansive new voyage with Moana, Maui and a brand-new crew of unlikely seafarers,” reads the film‘s synopsis. “After receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she’s ever faced.”
The original film was directed by Ron Clements and John Musker. It was not only a commercial success with a gross of over $600 million, but it also earned positive reviews from critics and earned two Oscar nominations including Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song.
When does the Moana live-action movie come out?
In addition to Moana 2, a live-action remake of the first movie is on the horizon. Set to release on June 27, 2025, it will be directed by Tony winner Thomas Kail and produced by Dwayne Johnson, who will reprise his role as Maui in the live-action version. It will be executive produced by Auli‘i Cravalho, who voiced the titular character in Moana.
