The director of Dune: Part Two has commented on the fact that the upcoming second installment ends on a cliff-hanger.
Speaking with Vanity Fair, Denis Villeneuve delved into how the end of Dune: Part Two is accurate to Frank Herbert’s original book, which concludes with the start of “something that is out of control” and leads into Dune Messiah.
“That’s how the book ends,” the director explained. “The Dune book ends with the beginning of something that is out of control, and I thought this was a very powerful ending. I feel that both movies complete the adaptation of the book, and I feel very good about that. When people ask me, is there a world where I could do Messiah? Yes …”
Dune: Part Two is once again directed by Denis Villeneuve from a screenplay he co-wrote with Jon Spaihts. Stars Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya return for the film, as do Rebecca Ferguson, Stellan Skarsgård, Dave Bautista, Javier Bardem, Josh Brolin, and Stephen McKinley Henderson.
Joining them are franchise newcomers Christopher Walken as Emperor Shaddam IV, Florence Pugh as Princess Irulan, Austin Butler as Feyd-Rautha, Léa Seydoux as Lady Margot, and Souheila Yacoub as Shishakli.
What happens in Dune: Part Two?
“This follow-up film will explore the mythic journey of Paul Atreides as he unites with Chani and the Fremen while on a warpath of revenge against the conspirators who destroyed his family,” reads the synopsis. “Facing a choice between the love of his life and the fate of the known universe, he endeavors to prevent a terrible future only he can foresee.”
