Afterburn: Samuel L. Jackson & Dave Bautista to Lead Comic Book Movie Adaptation

An upcoming movie adaptation of the Red 5 comic Afterburn is being made, with Samuel L. Jackson and Dave Bautista set to lead the film.

According to Deadline, Jackson will play a freedom fighter named Valentine while Bautista‘s role will be that of Jake — an ex-soldier who recovers valuable objects from the “old world” as a treasure hunter. The story takes place in a post-apocalyptic world ten years after a solar flare wipes the world’s technology.

A press release states that Afterburn is being directed by J.J. Perry and produced by Neal H. Moritz and Toby Jaffe for Original Film and Steve Richards for Endurance Media. Finally, Bautista will produce through Dogbone Entertainment while Black Bear introduces the movie to international buyers. Principal photography is set to begin in Europe this April.

“Afterburn is a terrific action story, combining the fun of Indiana Jones with the near future world building of Children of Men,” Jaffe stated. “J.J. is going to bring this to life in a thrilling way, using real practical stunt work to create authentic, visceral set pieces. Dave is one of the leading action stars in the world today, as well as being an actor with real soul and versatility. So excited to be making Afterburn with them both.”

What is the plot of Afterburn?

“Ten years after a solar flare wiped out technology across the globe, ex-soldier Jake (Bautista) works as a treasure hunter recovering valuable objects from the old world for powerful clients,” reads the official synopsis. “His latest mission: team up with freedom fighter Drea to recover the Mona Lisa before an unhinged warlord gets there first.”
