Night Swim Sets Digital Release Date

Blumhouse & Atomic Monster’s Night Swim is coming to digital platforms tomorrow, January 23, just over two weeks after hitting theaters on January 5.

Directed and written by Bryce McGuire, with James Wan and Jason Blum having served as producers, Night Swim — based on a short film of the same name — follows former major league baseball player Ray Waller (Wyatt Russell) and his family as they move into a new house with a backyard swimming pool that seems to be the conduit of a sinister force.

The synopsis for Night Swim reads: “In the film, Ray Waller, a former major league baseball player forced into early retirement by a degenerative illness, who moves into a new home with his concerned wife Eve, teenage daughter Izzy, and young son Elliot. Secretly hoping, against the odds, to return to pro ball, Ray persuades Eve that the new home’s shimmering backyard swimming pool will be fun for the kids and provide physical therapy for him. But a dark secret in the home’s past will unleash a malevolent force that will drag the family under, into the depths of inescapable terror.”

Besides Russell, Night Swim also stars Kerry Condon (The Banshees of Inisherin), Amélie Hoeferle (The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes), and Gavin Warren (Fear the Walking Dead). Executive producers are Michael Clear, Judson Scott, and Ryan Turek.

Night Swim failed to stay afloat

While Night Swim may have managed to break even with its over $36 million global box office revenue against a $15 million budget, the returns are fairly unimpressive given how well other Blumhouse releases have performed both domestically and internationally.

The film also failed to make waves with critics, garnering only a 22% critic score and a 41% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. ComingSoon’s very own Alyse Wax even called the film “a disappointing (and shallow) dip for Blumhouse,” while ComingSoon’s Jonathan Sim described Night Swim as “a mediocre horror movie experience.”

Despite its poor critical reception, the film may possibly find redemption when it welcomes a new set of audiences on January 23. The film’s digital release is available to own or rent.
