A new image from the upcoming Nosferatu remake has been shared by Entertainment Weekly, previewing Willem Dafoe‘s crazed vampire hunter.
The new image shows Dafoe — who plays vampire hunter Professor Albin Eberhart Von Franz — standing in front of a tomb while his surroundings are in flames. Dafoe is holding what looks to be an oil canister of some sort and laughing maniacally.
According to director Robert Eggers, the scene is not only surrounded by actual fire, but thousands of real rats. “That sequence, aside from having real flames, had 2,000 real rats,” said Eggers. “Which was challenging but also fun.”

What do we know about the Nosferatu remake?
Earlier this week, fans got their first official look at the upcoming Nosferatu remake, in a still of star Lily-Rose Depp with the shadow of a clawed hand in front of her. Alongside Depp, the Nosferatu remake will also star Bill Skarsgård as the infamous Count Orlok, Nicholas Hoult, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Emma Corrin, Willem Dafoe, Simon McBurney, and Ralph Ineson.
Similar to the original film, the story of Nosferatu will be a “gothic tale of obsession” that focuses on a haunted young woman being stalked by a Transylvanian vampire. The original film was released 100 years ago in 1922, and has since been regarded as one of the most influential films of all time, a horror masterpiece, and high up on the short list of SpongeBob SquarePants‘ weirdest references.
