Twisters: Upcoming Disaster Sequel Isn’t Continuing the Original Movie’s Story

Twisters, the upcoming sequel to 1996’s Twister, won’t continue the story from the original movie.

Speaking with Collider, writer Mark L. Smith discussed what fans can expect out of the upcoming Twisters sequel, which hits theaters next summer, and how it will be different from the original Twister movie directed by Jan de Boot.

“It’s a lot of fun,” Smith said. “[Director Lee Isaac Chung] did his own thing to the script a little bit because that’s what they do, so I don’t know about some of the changes exactly. So, I don’t know the details, but it’s a separate story. It’s not a continuation of the original. But it’s just a real wild ride with some good, fun characters. Hopefully, we can tap into what the original had because that thing is just iconic. But it’s so cool to have a director like Isaac taking on something like this. It’s just so out of his norm, and I think he’s having fun. I was texting with him a couple days ago, and it’s just all craziness of it.”

What else do we know about Twisters?

Originally announced as a remake in 2020 before being declared a sequel in October 2022, Universal describes Twisters as “a new chapter from the 1996 movie,” per Variety.

The movie, written by Smith and directed by Chung, will star Daisy Edgar-Jones, Glen Powell, Anthony Ramos, Brandon Perea, Daryl McCormack, Maura Tierney, Harry Hadden-Paton, Sasha Lane, Kieran Shipka, Nik Dodani, David Corenswet, Tunde Adebimpe, and Katy O’Brian.

“I talked to so many storm experts, tornado experts, storm chasers, and rode around with some,” Smith further said about the upcoming movie. “Even the tornado season itself, because of climate change, what used to be tornado alley going through a certain stretch. It now extends so further east, and it’s moving across, and the dates are wider, and the numbers are higher, and the storms themselves are more violent. So we did use elements of that just to shine a light on it, as well, the causes and effects of climate change.”

Twisters is scheduled to be released in the United States on July 19, 2024, from Universal Pictures.
