Emily Blunt still has hopes for an Edge of Tomorrow 2, but recently acknowledged that any script that may exist wouldn’t be able to work nowadays.
Speaking to Variety, Blunt revealed that she and director Doug Liman speak about a sequel “all the time,” and acknowledged that Tom Cruise (who starred in the original) does want to do it. However, Blunt said there would be age issues with any script.
“Doug [Liman] and I talk all the time about it. I know Tom wants to do it, hopefully, at some point,” said Blunt. “But it’s timing, but it’s also been 10 years since we made it. There was an amazing script in the works, but I think it would only have worked if we shot it eight years ago. I’m not saying we’re that ancient, but you have to factor in it’s been 10 years.”
Edge of Tomorrow was a surprise hit when it released in 2014
The original Edge of Tomorrow released in 2014, and starred Tom Cruise and Blunt. The film took place in a future where Europe has been occupied by an alien race, and followed Cruise’s character, who finds himself stuck in a time loop and repeating the same day over and over.
Edge of Tomorrow was directed by Liman, from a script written by Christopher McQuarrie, Jez Butterworth, and John-Henry Butterworth. The film was a hit for Warner Bros., earning over $370 million at the global box office.
