Disney Animator on Being Inspired by Wish Reviews: ‘Viewers Demand More’

A Walt Disney Animation Studios animator has commented on the mixed critical reception that the studio’s latest movie, Wish, has received since its release last week.

Taylor Gessler Lanning — an animator who has worked on films like Encanto, Strange World, and Wish — took to Twitter to speak about the most recent film’s reviews. Lanning said that she’s proud of Wish but that the movie’s mixed reviews “inspired” her, as they showed that “viewers demand more from this art form.”

She goes on to state that “we need to keep innovating and pushing for what is next in animation,” before explaining that Disney had a similar period of difficulty prior to the 1989 release of The Little Mermaid. Finally, the animator states that “new creative genius” is needed to keep animation “fresh” going forward and that she’s confident it will happen as artists keep taking risks.

Together, they will face the most formidable of foes to save her community and prove that when the will of one courageous human connects with the magic of the stars — wondrous things can happen.”
