According to Deadline, Oscar winner Brendan Fraser has signed on for the leading role in Searchlight Pictures’ upcoming drama titled Rental Family, which hails from Beef director Hikari.
This serves as Fraser’s first solo leading movie following his acclaimed performance in A24’s The Whale. He’s currently starring in Martin Scorsese’s latest epic drama Killers of the Flower Moon. Besides Rental Family, he will next be seen in the comedy movie Brothers starring Josh Brolin and Peter Dinklage.
What is Rental Family?
Rental Family will be directed by Hikari from a screenplay she co-wrote with Stephen Blahut. In the film, Fraser will be playing a a down-and-out actor living in Tokyo. “He’s hired as a token American guy for a Japanese rental-family company, leading him on an unexpected journey of self-discovery through the roles he plays in other people’s lives,” reads the synopsis.
The film has been Hikari’s passion project since 2012. It is executive produced by Blahut and Tomo Koizumi, with Shin Yamaguchi, Eddie Vaisman, and Julia Lebedev set as producers. Searchlight’s Taylor Friedman and Daniel Yu will be overseeing the project in behalf of the studio. Production on the upcoming drama will begin in the spring of 2024 in Japan.
