Mel Gibson’s sequel to 2004’s The Passion of the Christ will be split into multiple parts.
Per WorldOfReel, the IMDB page for the upcoming Passion of the Christ sequel currently lists the title as “The Passion of the Christ: Resurrection – Part 1,” thus implying a Part 2 (and potentially more than that) is coming and will be released at a later date.
Jim Caviezel, who stars as Jesus in The Passion of The Christ and is returning for the sequel, previously hinted that The Passion of the Christ: Resurrection could be divided up into multiple films during an interview posted on Mihael Orehovec‘s YouTube page in July 2023.
“[Gibson] is working on that. Right now, he’s doing a movie with [Mark] Wahlberg, so he’s finishing that, but he’s been on this for a long, long time,” Caviezel said. “It will be the biggest film in history. It might be two films. Could be three, but I think it’s two.”
What else do we know about The Passion of the Christ: Resurrection?
Having been in development since 2016, The Passion of the Christ: Resurrection will once again be directed by Gibson. Gibson is co-writing the project, which will focus on the events surrounding the resurrection of Jesus, with Randall Wallace.
The IMDB page’s description for The Passion of the Christ: Resurrection – Part 1 reads, “A sequel to The Passion of the Christ (2004) focuses on the events that occurred three days between the crucifixion and resurrection when Jesus Christ descended to Abraham’s Bosom to preach and resurrect Old Testament saints.”
In July 2023, Gibson said he had two different scripts for The Passion of the Christ: Resurrection, one of which he compared to an “acid trip.” He said, “I have two scripts and one of them is very structured and very strong script and kind of more what should expect and the other is like an acid trip. Because you’re going into other realms and stuff. I mean you’re in hell and you’re watching the angels fall. It’s like crazy.”
The Passion of the Christ: Resurrection – Part 1 currently has a 2025 release date on IMDB. The movie is reportedly expected to start production in January 2024.
