Negotiations between the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) continue today, October 26, 2023, following a brief pause giving SAG-AFTRA time to review AMPTP’s latest offer.
On Tuesday, October 24, SAG-AFTRA issued a statement saying, “Today, the CEOs came back to the table. We are scheduled to continue talks with them tomorrow.”
According to Deadline, SAG-AFTRA and the AMPTP didn’t end up meeting on Wednesday, October 25, after the guild requested more time to review the offer the CEO Gang of Four and AMPTP president Carol Lombardini presented on Tuesday.
“Don’t read anything more into this than what it is — time to review, look at the numbers, consider the counter,” a source close to the talks told Deadline. “This happens all the time in these kinds of negotiations. Shows people are serious, and that’s a good thing,”
SAG-AFTRA and Hollywood’s CEOs are now resuming negotiations
SAG-AFTRA issued a brief statement on October 25 reading, “Our committee spent today reviewing the latest AMPTP counter offer. We will be meeting across the table with the CEOs tomorrow.”
According to Deadline, the four CEOs — Disney’s Bob Iger, NBCUniversal’s Donna Langley, Warner Bros Discovery’s David Zaslav, and Netflix’s Ted Sarandos — hoped their latest offer would secure a three-year deal with the guild. More than one person close to the talks told Deadline the proposal “flopped” in the room, while others said this was simply the nature of the way these negotiations tend to work.
The SAG-AFTRA strike began on July 14, 2023. The strike calls for better wages, protection against artificial intelligence, and more for actors. The Writers Guild of America (WGA) also went on strike on May 2, 2023, but came to an agreement with the AMPTP that saw the strike officially end on September 27, 2023.
