Toho is taking back the Godzilla mantle America borrowed for a brand new Japanese Godzilla movie, and it looks mouthwatering.
The first Godzilla Minus One trailer was revealed recently and it showed a blend of human drama and brutal monster destruction in Post-War Japan. The Minus One moniker and time period appear to suggest a reboot of sorts where Godzilla appears earlier than his original 1954 debut.
Directed by Takashi Yamazaki, this is the first live-action Godzilla movie from Japan since the stupendous Shin Godzilla in 2016, in which time we’ve had the King of Monsters Western version appear a couple of times.
Godzilla Minus One Trailer and Release Date
Godzilla Minus One is getting a Japanese release on November 3, 2023, with a Western release set for December 1, 2023. Given the creature’s modern prominence thanks to its Western outings, it’s good to see a Toho version getting a theatrical run.
It marks a bountiful period in the lead-up to Godzilla’s 70th anniversary in 2024 as the Apple TV series Monarch and Godzilla X Kong also arrive in the next year.
