Barbie director Greta Gerwig has commented on whether she would direct a James Bond movie.
With Gerwig’s new Barbie movie releasing in theaters starring Margot Robbie as Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Ken, she has been the subject of critical praise. However, this is not her first time getting positive reviews, having received acclaim for her work on Lady Bird and Little Women.
It’s no wonder why she has been tapped to direct two The Chronicles of Narnia movies for Netflix. She has previously stated her intent to become a big studio director. In a recent podcast, Gerwig shared an update on her Narnia movies and was then asked if she would direct a movie in the famous James Bond movie series.
“Oh my God. We’re going to just stick with some lions and some dolls for the moment,” Greta Gerwig said. “But you never know. I really like [Bond franchise producer] Barbara Broccoli, so…”
Another director who was recently asked about directing Bond is Christopher Nolan, whose new movie Oppenheimer releases on the same day as Barbie. “The influence of those movies in my filmography is embarrassingly apparent. It would be an amazing privilege to do one,” Nolan said on the podcast Happy Sad Confused. “At the same time, when you take on a character like that, you’re working with a particular set of constraints.”
Continued Nolan, “It has to be the right moment in your creative life where you can express what you want to express and really burrow into something within the appropriate constraints because you would never want to take on something like that and do it wrong.”
