Director Kenneth Branagh will reportedly helm a Gargoyles movie.
This news comes courtesy of the Belfast Telegraph. The purported feature film will be based on the animated 1990s TV series which followed nocturnal creatures known as gargoyles who turn to stone during the day. Branagh, director of films like Thor, Murder on the Orient Express, and Belfast, will direct the upcoming movie from Disney. This is another live-action adaptation from the brand.
Talks of a live-action Gargoyles movie have been circulating for years. In 2011, David Elliot and Paul Lovett, the screenwriting team behind G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, were tapped to write a script. In 2018, Jordan Peele pitched a Gargoyles movie to Disney, but it never got picked up.
ComingSoon interviewed Greg Weisman, creator of the Gargoyles TV series, and asked about the project Peele pitched. “The fact that he gave a damn about Gargoyles, knew what it was, knew who I am, was tremendously gratifying,” Weisman said. “Nothing really came of it, unfortunately, but I can’t say I wasn’t thrilled by it. It was neat.”
