Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling are about to be two of the biggest stars this summer with Barbie. However, their collaboration has only just begun. Robbie and Gosling are set to star in the Ocean’s Eleven prequel, which begins filming in France at the end of June, according to FTIA’s Production List. The film is currently undated.
What to Expect in Ocean’s Eleven Prequel?
Jay Roach, the director behind the Austin Powers franchise and 2019’s Bombshell, is set to direct the Ocean’s Eleven Prequel. While promoting his new series, High Desert, Roach shared his plans for the prequel with Lindsey Bahr of AP News. The prequel will be a 1960s heist/love story, set at the Monaco Grand Prix.
“Margot brought it to me as a kind of old-fashioned epic love story slash adventure disguised as a heist,” Roach said. “It is a heist movie still, but it’s very much a love story. And we were both inspired by Hitchcock, To Catch a Thief but also Notorious. It just wants to be a big, big, you know, cinematic spectacle. We didn’t quite sync up yet on what the right budget for it is.”
Although there was some hesitation in pairing Robbie and Gosling together again, Roach believes the idea of seeing them in another movie is something the audience wants to see.
“Originally there were some questions about whether it would be weird to have (Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling) together again after Barbie,” Roach said. “But I think there’s just some pairings you want to see over and over again. It’s such a powerful, powerful duo, you know? And it’s and the suspense of will they come together; will they trust each other enough to team up? That’s romantic.”
Robbie and Gosling can next be seen in Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, which hits theaters on July 21. Meanwhile, Roach’s High Desert is currently airing on Apple TV+.
