Martin Scorsese might have his next movie nailed down. The legendary director said he’s working on a new film about Jesus — prompted by a meeting with Pope Francis.
What did Martin Scorsese say about his next movie?
Scorsese was recently on hand for The Global Aesthetics of the Catholic Imagination conference in Rome, Italy this past weekend. Prior to the event (via Variety), Scorsese and his wife Helen Morris met with Pope Francis during a private audience at the Vatican.
After the meeting and conference, Scorsese then announced his plans for a screenplay about the life of Christ.
“I have responded to the Pope’s appeal to artists in the only way I know how: by imagining and writing a screenplay for a film about Jesus,” Scorsese said. “And I’m about to start making it,” the director added, suggesting that this could be his next film.
Scorsese is no stranger to making films about religion, with the legendary director also making 1988’s The Last Temptation of Christ, which starred Willem Dafoe as Jesus. Scorsese also made another heavily religious film in 2016’s Silence, a film about two 17th-century Jesuit priests who travel from Portugal to Japan to spread Catholic Christianity.
Up next for Scorsese is the highly anticipated Killers of the Flower Moon, a film that stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro, Lily Gladstone, Jesse Plemons, and Brendan Fraser.
