Nearly two years after the release of 2021’s Free Guy, the film’s star, Ryan Reynolds, has talked about the current possibility of a sequel. While speaking with Variety, Reynolds entertained the idea of a Free Guy sequel, but suggested that not every movie needs to have a follow-up.
“There is the potential to do a sequel to Free Guy, which would be fun. I would love it. But also like, does everything f–king have to be a sequel? I don’t know,” Reynolds stated. “Sometimes it’s OK to just do a movie and have it kick ass and then everyone go home.”
The actor also explained that a movie should validate itself, rather than require a sequel to do so.
“So you know, there’s a bit of a push and pull there, resisting the urge to just immediately say, ‘Ohh, doing a sequel will validate the first one.’ No, the first movie validates the first one and then you can leave it at that. So I don’t know, we’re still talking about it,” Reynolds said.
Free Guy was directed by Shawn Levy (Stranger Things, Night at the Museum franchise) from a script written by Matt Lieberman and Zak Penn, based on a story by Lieberman. It was produced by Ryan Reynolds, Shawn Levy, Sarah Schechter, Greg Berlanti, and Adam Kolbrenner, with Mary McLaglen, Josh McLaglen, George Dewey, Dan Levine, and Michael Riley McGrath serving as executive producers.
