According to Deadline, 20th Century Studios and Hulu are in the process of developing a film adaptation of The Boogeyman, based on Stephen King’s horror short story of the same name. Host filmmaker Rob Savage has been tapped to direct the project, which is expected to begin its production sometime this winter or spring in New Orleans.

First published in the 1973 issue of Cavalier magazine, The Boogeyman begins with a man recalling the recent events of his life to his psychiatrist Dr. Harper after the death of many children, who were killed by a creature lurking in the closet. The short story was later released in 1978 as part of King’s Night Shift collection.

“Still reeling from the tragic death of their mother, a teenage girl and her little brother find themselves plagued by a sadistic presence in their house and struggle to get their grieving father to pay attention before it’s too late,” reads the film’s logline.

The film adaptation was first announced in 2018, with A Quiet Place scribes Scott Beck and Bryan Woods attached to the horror film. The project is now being written by Black Swan’s Mark Heyman, based on the original drafts co-written by Beck, Woods, and Akela Cooper.
