The Criterion Collection is making the leap to 4K, as the company announced on Wednesday that they will soon be releasing its first-ever batch of 4K Ultra HD Blu-rays, with one of the greatest films ever made leading the list of releases.

For the first time since the company released the film on laserdisc 37 years ago, Citizen Kane will be making its return to the collection and will release alongside a handful of other breakthrough films. These include Allen and Albert Hughe’s directorial debut Menace II Society, Jane Campion’s Academy Award-winning The Piano, David Lynch’s Mulholland Dr., Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger’s The Red Shoes, and Richard Lester’s A Hard Day’s Night.

Each film will available in a 4K Ultra HD combo pack that features a 4K UHD disc of the film and a Blu-ray of the film, alongside the various special features that the boutique company has come to be known for. Criterion also noted that some films will also include support for Dolby Vision HDR and Dolby Atmos, although it’s not known which of them will be supported just yet.

The six titles will be fully detailed next week in Criterion’s November 2021 announcements, when Criterion likely plans to announce which of the six titles will be releasing first. In the meantime, fans have already begun wondering which films will be getting the upgrade treatment, as the Criterion Collection has grown to over 1,000 films since its inception.
