STX Acquires Global Rights to Greenland 2 in $75 Million Deal

Following a competitive bidding war against multiple studios, STXfilms has successfully won the worldwide rights to Ric Roman Waugh’s forthcoming disaster action sequel Greenland: Migration from Anton, who fully financed the production of the film. According to Deadline, the acquisition deal reportedly cost STXfilms around $25 million for its domestic rights and another $50 million for its international distribution, making it the biggest sale at this year’s Cannes virtual market. Production is expected to begin next year.

“Gerry, Morena, Ric, Basil, and Alan were fantastic partners on the first film and we look forward to building on the success and momentum as we work together with Anton to deliver another effects-based spectacle driven by great characters and performances. What comes next for the Garrity Family is even more thrilling,” Chairman of STX’s Motion Picture Group, Adam Fogelson said in a statement.

Anton’s CEO, Sebastien Raybaud added, “STX and their partners did an incredible job of launching the film worldwide last year and we are thrilled the sequel will return “home” for the exciting next chapter of this must-see adventure.”

Greenland: Migration will once again be led by Gerard Butler and Morena Baccarin as they reprise their roles as John and Allison Garrity. The sequel will continue to follow the story of the Garrity family, who survive a near-extinction level event when an interstellar comet hits the earth, who must leave the safety of the Greenland bunker and embark on a perilous journey across the decimated frozen wasteland of Europe to find a new home.
