Following the announcement of development on the project in November with Game of Thrones alum Peter Dinklage set to star in the titular role, Legendary’s The Toxic Avenger reboot is expanding its cast with the addition of Jacob Tremblay (Good Boys), according to Deadline.

The remake is being described as a contemporary reimagining of the 1984 cult classic Troma Entertainment comedy, subverting the superhero genre akin to Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool, and will center on a struggling everyman who is transformed into a mutant freak after being pushed into a vat of toxic waste and must become an underdog hero to save his son, his friends and the community from the forces of corruption and greed.
The reboot is being directed by Macon Blair, whose directorial debut, I Don’t Feel At Home in This World Anymore, premiered in 2017 and won the Grand Jury Prize award at the Sundance Film Festival. Blair is also known for his acting work in Blue Ruin, Green Room, Murder Party, Gold, Logan Lucky, American Woman and Netflix’s horror drama Hold the Dark.

The Troma original kickstarted a franchise that included four feature sequels, Part II, Part III: The Last Temptation of Toxie and Citizen Toxie, as well as a musical production, a children’s cartoon TV series and a Marvel comic. Original directing-producing duo Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz are set to produce the reboot for Troma Entertainment while Alex Garcia and Jay Ashenfelter will oversee development for Legendary.

The Toxic Avenger becomes the latest upcoming feature project for Dinklage after recently signing on to star in the Searchlight Pictures psychological thriller Keith, as well as Blair’s other in-development comedy Brothers, in which he’ll star alongside Josh Brolin (Avengers: Endgame), and the action adventure Good Bad & Undead in which he’s in talks to star alongside fellow GoT alum Jason Momoa, the latter two of which are also set at Legendary Entertainment.
