Space Jam: A New Legacy sees LeBron and his young son Cole, who has aspirations of becoming a video game developer, finding themselves trapped in a digital world by a rogue algorithm named Al-G Rhythm, with the sports star having to lead Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, Lola Bunny and the rest of the undisciplined Tunes to victory over Al-G’s digitized players on the court to return home and save the world.

James leads an ensemble roster that includes Star Trek: Discovery star Sonequa Martin-Green as his wife Kamiyah and The Falcon and The Winter Soldier‘s Don Cheadle as Al-G, as well as Portland Trailblazers’ Damian Lillard, New Orleans Pelicans’ Anthony Davis, Golden State Warriors’ Klay Thompson and Draymond Green, Los Angeles Lakers’ Kyle Kuzma, Phoenix Suns’ Chris Paul, Phoenix Mercury’s Diana Taurasi and Los Angeles Sparks’ siblings Chiney and Nneka Ogwumike. The cast for the film also includes Star Trek: Discovery and The Walking Dead alum Sonequa Martin-Green as James’ wife Kamiyah.

After languishing in development hell for nearly 20 years, with other spin-offs starring Tiger Woods, Jeff Gordon and Tony Hawk explored, A New Legacy officially entered development in 2014 with James as the star and Justin Lin (F9: The Fast Saga) set in the director’s chair, though after his still-unexplained departure from the project, Terence Nance (Random Acts of Flyness) stepped in, only to also depart due to creative differences with the studio and producers over the vision of the film, with Malcolm D. Lee (Girls Trip) landing the job in the end.

In addition to starring, James produces the film alongside Black Panther writer/director Ryan Coogler, Maverick Carter and Duncan Henderson while Sev Ohanian, Zinzi Coogler, Allison Abbate, Jesse Ehrman, Jamal Henderson, Spencer Beighley, Lin, Nance and Ivan Reitman all executive produce.

In the 1996 fan-favorite original, Michael Jordan teamed up with Looney Tunes characters to battle a group of animated aliens on the court. Space Jam went on to gross $230 million worldwide and besides Jordan, included some of the NBA’s biggest stars like Larry Bird, Charles Barkley, and Patrick Ewing. Bugs Bunny and the Looney Tunes will now team with James on the court to battle an unknown entity.

Space Jam: A New Legacy will arrive in theaters and on HBO Max on July 16! Relive the original by purchasing it now.
