Lionsgate Announces The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard Release Date!

Lionsgate announced the release date for the sequel to the hit comedy The Hitman’s Bodyguard, aptly titled The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard, which will make its theatrical debut on Wednesday, June 16, putting it squarely between the releases of Warner Bros.’ film adaptation of In The Heights and Pixar’s Luca. The announcement was made by Ron Schwartz, Lionsgate’s president of Worldwide Distribution.

“This is the kind of summer action film that delivers even more comedy and more thrilling action than the first film – and it’s perfect for fans new to the franchise as well,” Ron Schwartz, Lionsgate’s President of Worldwide Distribution, said in a statement. “The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard is what summer moviegoing is all about – great, crowd-pleasing entertainment.”

The sequel will see the returns of Ryan Reynolds (Deadpool 2), Samuel L. Jackson (Spider-Man: Far From Home), Salma Hayek (Drunk Parents) and Richard E. Grant (Star Wars: Rise of the Skywalker) alongside series newcomers Academy Award-winning actor Morgan Freeman (Million Dollar Baby), Antonio Banderas (The Mask of Zorro), Frank Grillo (The Purge) and Tom Hopper (The Umbrella Academy).

The highly-anticipated follow-up sees Bryce – still unlicensed and under scrutiny – forced into action by Darius and his wife, the infamous international con artist Sonia. As Bryce is driven over the edge by his two most dangerous protectees, the trio get in over their heads in a global plot and soon find that they are all that stand between Europe and a vengeful and powerful madman (Antonio Banderas). Joining in the fun and deadly mayhem is Morgan Freeman as … well, you’ll have to see.

Patrick Hughes has returned to the director’s chair for the film with original writer Tom O’Connor penning the story and the script alongside Phillip and Brandon Murphy, with Millennium Media’s Matt O’Toole and Campbell Grobman Film’s Les Weldon producing Christa Campbell and Lati Grobman of Campbell Grobman, Avi Lerner, Trevor Short, Boaz Davidson, Jeffrey Greenstein and Jonathan Yunger all executive produce.

The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard was originally scheduled for release on August 28 of last year, but was one of many films delayed by the COVID outbreak. The Hitman’s Bodyguard was released on August 18, 2017 and grossed over $180 million worldwide and featured an ensemble cast that included Gary Oldman, Elodie Yung, Joaquim de Almeida, Kirsty Mitchell and Richard E. Grant alongside Reynolds, Jackson and Hayek.
