Fresh off working together on HBO’s acclaimed adaptation of Lovecraft Country, star Jurnee Smollett and executive producer Misha Green are reuniting for an action vehicle Fuel with Amazon Studios currently in talks to acquire the pitch in a heated bidding war, according to Deadline.

The film, which is being penned by Kat Wood (Diplomatic Courier, Envoy), will center on a wheel woman, a modern take on a familiar character, and is described as “an action-packed female empowerment story that will subvert the relationship between cars and masculinity” and will see the heroine coerced into working for a criminal and breaking all the rules she set out for herself.
Smollett, also coming off the well-received DC Extended Universe ensemble pic Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), is currently set to star in the film and produce alongside Green while Wood is attached to executive produce the project, with no director currently attached to the project. In addition to Lovecraft, Green and Smollett previously worked on together on the acclaimed WGN America series Underground, which ran for two seasons.

Fuel marks the latest venture into the film world for Green after over a decade working in television, including her recent signing on to write and direct the Alicia Vikander-led Tomb Raider sequel at MGM in Green’s feature directorial debut and penning and producing The Mother, recently acquired by Netflix in a similarly-competitive bidding battle, and Warner Bros. revival of Cleopatra Jones.
