According to The Hollywood Reporter, Olivia Newman will direct the film adaptation of Delia Owen’s debut novel Where the Crawdads Sing for Sony Pictures. Click here to purchase the novel!
Per the report, “The story follows Kya, a young woman that is abandoned by her family and is left alone to raise herself on a marsh outside a small North Carolina town. After she becomes a respected author, publishing reference books on the local flora and fauna of her marsh, she is accused of murder of her former boyfriend, the town’s golden boy. The story is both a crime thriller and a coming-of-age tale that intertwines two timelines.”

Reese Witherspoon and Lauren Neustadter will serve as producers via their Hello Sunshine banner for 3000 Pictures.
Lucy Alibar, who was nominated for an Oscar for her work on Beasts of the Southern Wild, is writing the script with Newman primed to do a rewrite when the time comes.
Witherspoon picked Where the Crawdads Sing as her book of the month for September 2018, which helped it reach The New York Times bestseller list. To date, it is currently the No. 1 hardcover fiction and No. 1 in audio with over 7 million copies sold worldwide.
