Anya Taylor-Joy Being Considered for George Miller’s Furiosa Spin-Off

It’s been five years since Mad Max: Fury Road exploded at the box office and Oscars. After years of development and legal issues in the way of a spin-off focused on Charlize Theron’s Furiosa, it appears progress may finally be underway as director George Miller is reportedly eyeing Anya Taylor-Joy (The New Mutants) for a role in the film, according to Variety.

With many studios struggling with development and release slates due to the global coronavirus pandemic, most executives and filmmakers are reportedly not expecting things to get back to normal for several weeks, but some are taking video and phone meetings in the hopes of greenlighting new projects in the next 12 months. Miller is one of those directors meeting with stars, namely Taylor-Joy, for his long-awaited Furiosa spin-off, which he hopes to enter production on next year, taking auditions via Skype and phone calls.

Mad Max: Fury Road, which opened in May of 2015, is the story of Max Rockatansky, played by Tom Hardy (InceptionThe Dark Knight Rises). Within this world of fire and blood exist two rebels on the run who just might be able to restore order. There’s Max (Hardy), a man of action and a man of few words, who seeks peace of mind following the loss of his wife and child in the aftermath of the chaos and Furiosa (Charlize Theron), a woman of action and a woman who believes her path to survival may be achieved if she can make it across the desert back to her childhood homeland. A Mad Max prequel might show us her life in The Green Place before she started working for Immortan Joe.
