George Miller Offers Update on Mad Max Future

After giving audiences hope earlier this year that the financial dispute between him and Warner Bros. over the smash Mad Max: Fury Road was coming to a close, director George Miller has revealed that major headway is finally being made on getting another installment in the action franchise underway!

In an interview with Deadline for his next mystery action project entitled Three Thousand Years of Longing, which has locked in Idris Elba (Thor: Ragnarok) and Tilda Swinton (Avengers: Endgame) to star, Miller revealed that he plans to tackle a Fury Road sequel right after the new film and that he’s already developing it as he preps for the start of shooting on Longing.

I’m not done with the Mad Max story and I think you have to be a multi-tasker and there’s certainly another Mad Max coming down the pike after this,” he said. “We’re in preparation on that as well. It’s an interesting question, the idea of multi-tasking. I discuss this with other filmmakers and I think what happens to me is that when you’re working on one thing, and you get so distracted and focused on that one thing, it’s like a creative holiday to focus on the other one for a bit. It helps you achieve that objectivity, to look at the thing afresh each time and say, I thought I was doing this, but it doesn’t seem to be the case now.

Miller has described Longing as an almost anti-Mad Max, with most of the film set in interior locations and featuring lots of dialogue versus Fury Road‘s more silent and action-heavy story, while still promising it will be a visually strong film. But while it will greatly contrast from his long-running franchise, he says the distinct differences in tone are what truly helps keep his creative streak alive.

The more different the films are, the more interesting that is,” he said. “A really good example: I was working on Happy Feet Two while Fury Road was getting up and then falling down. They couldn’t have been more different. One was animation, the other live-action. It worked for me.

Mad Max: Fury Road, which opened in May of 2015, is the story of Max Rockatansky, played by Tom Hardy (InceptionThe Dark Knight Rises). Within this world of fire and blood exist two rebels on the run who just might be able to restore order. There’s Max (Hardy), a man of action and a man of few words, who seeks peace of mind following the loss of his wife and child in the aftermath of the chaos and Furiosa (Charlize Theron), a woman of action and a woman who believes her path to survival may be achieved if she can make it across the desert back to her childhood homeland. A Mad Max prequel might show us her life in The Green Place before she started working for Immortan Joe.
