Bad Grandpa Takes Over the Box Office

After reigning atop the box office for three weeks in a row, Alfonso Cuaron’s Gravity dropped a spot to second place and was topped by Paramount and MTV Films’ Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa, directed by Jeff Tremaine and starring Johnny Knoxville and Jackson Nicholl. “Bad Grandpa,” which was made for just $15 million, opened to $32 million from 3,336 theaters, an average of $9,592 per location. Overseas, the movie earned another $8.1 million from 16 markets. Compared to the other “Jackass” films, the first film opened in October 2002 to $22.8 million, Jackass: Number Two debuted with $29 million in September 2006, and Jackass 3D took in $50.4 million in October 2010.

While it dropped to second place, Warner Bros.’ Gravity did add another $20.3 million its fourth weekend, a dip in ticket sales of just 32.4%. This means the space thriller has now reached $199.8 million domestically. Starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney, the movie also brought in $36.6 million overseas this weekend to bring its international total to $164.4 million and worldwide total so far to $364.2 million.

Third place belong to Columbia Pictures’ Captain Phillips, which earned $11.8 million its third weekend, pushing its total to $70.1 million.

Although it packed plenty of star power with Michael Fassbender, Penélope Cruz, Cameron Diaz, Javier Bardem and Brad Pitt, the Ridley Scott-directed The Counselor opened to just $8 million from 3,044 theaters in fourth place. Averaging $2,628 per theater, the Cormac McCarthy-scripted thriller was made for $25 million.

Sony Pictures Animation’s Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 dropped to fifth place its fifth weekend with $6.1 million and $100.6 million earned so far. The sequel was produced for $78 million.

Screen Gems and MGM’s Carrie fell from third to sixth, taking in $5.9 million its second weekend for a total of $26 million. The remake cost $30 million to make.

In other notable news, Fox Searchlight Pictures’ 12 Years a Slave expanded to 123 theaters this weekend in which the Steve McQueen-directed drama earned an impressive $2.15 million, or $17,480 per theater. The film, starring Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael Fassbender, Benedict Cumberbatch and Brad Pitt, has brought in $3.4 million.

Also, Abdellatif Kechiche’s French film Blue is the Warmest Color, which received the dreaded NC-17 rating, performed really strong in just four theaters in Los Angeles and New York. Starring Adèle Exarchopoulos and Léa Seydoux, the drama earned $101,116 for an average of $25,279 per theater.
