J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot Closes Massive Five-Year Deal with WarnerMedia

J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot has closed a five-year megadeal with WarnerMedia, running through 2024 and including TV, film, games, and digital content.

WarnerMedia and Bad Robot Games, Abrams’ video game development division, will develop new large and indie games in association with Tencent and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment for mobile, PC, and console.

Bad Robot will continue working with the company on television projects on all platforms, including dramas and comedies, long-form/event series, digital, and more, as the production company has developed material for Warner Bros. TV for many years. Bad Robots’ current series include Westworld, Lovecraft, Demimonde for WarnerMedia’s HBO, as well as They Both Die at the End. Bad Robots has three series at Apple through Warner Bros. TV, including the Stephen King adaptation Lisey’s Story, Little Voice, and My Glory Was I Had Such Friends.

Under terms of the new agreement, Abrams and Bad Robot will now also develop original theatrical films for the divisions of the Warner Bros. Pictures Group, including Warner Bros. Pictures and New Line Cinema.

Closing out his agreement with Paramount, Abrams’ directed two Star Wars films under the deal including the upcoming Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Other projects Bad Robot developed under Paramount include the Cloverfield franchise, and the revivals of Mission: Impossible and Star Trek. Abrams will honor existing obligations to Paramount under their exit agreement.

The announcement comes after WarnerMedia landed a second overall megadeal renewal for Warner Bros. TV when the company re-upped Greg Berlanti’s $400 million deal last year.
