Tommy Lee Jones to Write and Direct The Cowboys

Tommy Lee Jones is set for his third big screen project as director and his second as writer. Variety reports that the Men in Black star will helm a remake of Mark Rydell’s 1972 western The Cowboys.

The Cowboys, in turn based on a novel by William Dale Jennings, stars John Wayne and Bruce Dern and follows a rancher who is forced to assemble a group of novice ranch hands for a 400 mile cattle drive.

Jones, who stars in next week’s The Family, previously directed The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada and wrote, directed and stars in the upcoming The Homesman.

The Cowboys will be produced by Donald De Line.
