While San Diego Comic-Con chugged along with endless announcements, the box office soared to record heights for the month of July as Walt Disney Pictures’ The Lion King opened to an estimated $185 million domestically, a record for both the month of July and a PG-rated movie. The film also debuted to the highest opening ever for a Walt Disney Studios release outside of Marvel and Lucasfilm, topping both Incredibles 2 ($182.7 million) and Beauty and the Beast ($174.7 million). Internationally the film brought in an estimated $269 million for a global weekend of $433 million, the 9th highest global opening of all time. Coupled with its earlier totals from opening early in China, the movie has brought in $531 million in 10 days, making it the #7 movie of the year. RealD also reports that 36% of the film’s worldwide total comes from audiences watching the film in the 3D format. If the film’s trajectory continues, it will no doubt crack the top 5 releases of the year (the top four of which already belong to Disney).
