Following the surprise success of the 2017 zombie comedy film titled One Cut of the Dead/”Kamera o Tomeru na!” (Don’t Stop the Camera!), Variety reports that the Japanese film is officially being adapted in an English-language remake with Patrick Cunningham to serve as producer. In partnership with creators Enbu Seminar, Shinichiro Ueda and Ryoichi Wada, Cunningham has successfully acquired the rights to film.

“I was only able to do so because I was one of the people who brought them together and helped resolve the conflict,” Cunningham said in an interview with the outlet. “Ueda-san and Wada-san were friends beforehand, had a misunderstanding, and are friends again now.”
The English remake is expected to shoot in the U.S. on a small budget. “The goal is for as many people as possible to see it,” Cunningham added. “We will know more about the direction it will take once we have attached a writer and director.”
One Cut of the Dead came from the Enbu Seminar acting school and its synopsis reads: “A small low budget film crew is shooting a zombie horror flick in an abandoned water filtration plant, allegedly once used for human experiments by the Japanese military. Just as the director browbeats his actors and demands more special effects blood, a real zombie apocalypse erupts, much to his auteur delight. Packed with meta-movie references as mocking as they are loving, this relentless takedown of the Living Dead genre is a total blast.”

The original film was directed and written by Shinichiro Ueda. It is low-budget film that impressively grossed over 3.12 billion yen in Japan and $30.5 million worldwide in a limited commercial release. The film is a fresh take on the zombie genre which starred Takayuki Hamatsu, Yuzuki Akiyama, Harumi Shuhama, Kazuaki Nagaya, Hiroshi Ichihara and Mao.
