Goodnight Mommy Is Getting An English Remake

Following the smash critical success of the 2014 foreign horror thriller Goodnight Mommy, an English-language adaptation has officially been ordered with David Kaplan, producer of the indie horror hit It Follows, set to produce for Animal Kingdom, according to Deadline.

Filming is set to begin in the third quarter of 2019 with Matt Sobel, the director of the well-received 2015 Sundance drama Take Me to the River, helming the remake and Kyle Warren (Lethal Weapon) penning the script based on their vision for the film.

Goodnight Mommy follows nine-year-old twin brothers Elias and Lukas in a lonesome house in the countryside as they await their mother’s return from her cosmetic surgery. When she comes home, her face is completely bandaged and nothing is like before, and while Lukas is initially pleased with the more relaxed atmosphere of the house, Elias remains suspicious and doubt begins to creep into both of their minds.

Upon its release in 2014 at the Venice Film Festival and 2015 in home country Austria, the film earned rave reviews from critics for its captivating plot, dark and moody atmosphere and chilling pace.

My favorite films are those that invite the audience to step inside their protagonist’s journey,” Sobel told the outlet.Whether fear of abandonment, or the dreadful realization that those closest to us may not be who they seem, our re-imagining of Goodnight Mommy aims to create an immersive nightmare, with visceral sensations front and center.”

Goodnight Mommy joins the genre of other foreign horror films with English adaptations, including the highly acclaimed Let Me In based on the 2008 Swedish horror film Let the Right One In, which itself was based on a 2004 Swedish novel.
