A lot of audiences don’t realize this, but “superhero” is not a genre, it’s just a character type. “Comic Book” isn’t a genre either, it’s just a medium, hence why you don’t hear comic book movies like Ghost World discussed too often in relation to Thor: The Dark World. Despite not being based on comics, movies like RoboCop and Darkman are superhero movies, but their genre is sci-fi action or horror film. A superhero movie can literally be any genre, which is something we try to explore in this list.

Even within the Blade trilogy you see a genre shift in each one, with the horror being dominant in the first, and slowly shifting towards action in the second and third films. Each film in Marvel’s Captain America trilogy explored a different genre, with the first being primarily a war movie, the second a paranoid thriller and the third being more a globetrotting action adventure.
