So far, 2014 has been a great year for original science fiction although how much one can call Mike (Another Earth) Cahill’s second feature I Origins “science fiction” may be debatable, depending on your viewpoint on the film’s deeply philosophical ideas.
It stars Michael Pitt (“Boardwalk Empire”) as Dr. Ian Shaw, a molecular biologist obsessed with the human eye and how one can improve upon it, particularly among the blind. Shaw’s life is somewhat complicated as he divides his time between his lab assistant Karen (Cahill’s Another Earth collaborator Brit Marling) and a beautiful model named Sofi (“Pirates of the Caribbean’s” Astrid Berges-Frisbey). After a tragic accident, Shaw’s scientific explorations change course as he uncovers a mysterious coincidence that has him questioning his own scientific theories.
ComingSoon.net attended the New York junket for the movie where we had a chance to talk with Michael Pitt, Brit Marling, Steve Yeun and Astrid Berges-Frisbey, the results of which you can see in the video player below.
I Origins opens in select cities on Friday, July 18. Look for our video interview with director Mike Cahill some time before then.
