What could be more perfect than a cinematic wedding ? It’s what any loving couple hopes for, a picture-perfect wedding that feels larger than life. A movie wedding can come in all sorts of different shapes and sizes—action movie weddings might be a little more catastrophic, romantic movie weddings might be a little unrealistic, and dramatic movie weddings might be a little too simple. Still, they’re all worth checking out regardless. No matter if you’re looking for inspiration yourself or just looking to appreciate some of the best weddings in film, these movies are your best bet.
Wedding movies
Bridesmaids (2011)
Kristen Wiig was and is a Saturday Night Live icon for the ages. Her first big project after leaving the show, Bridesmaids , practically achieved cult classic status overnight. It perfectly lampoons the lead-up to the wedding of her character’s best friend, ending with an iconic wedding scene with a memorable cameo.
Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994)
The king of romantic comedies back in the 90s and early 2000s, Hugh Grant’s Four Weddings and a Funeral gives viewers plenty to go off of if looking for some sort of inspiration. As the title suggests, you’ve got quite a few ceremonies to draw from here.
Mamma Mia! (2008)
Weddings are fun! Just look at the exclamation points! An infectious jukebox musical, Mamma Mia! puts ABBA’s earworms front-and-center, with Amanda Seyfried’s character’s picture-perfect wedding taking the backseat to some truly inspired musical sequences.
Margot at the Wedding (2007)
A great instance of a less-than-perfect wedding, Noah Baumbach’s Margot at the Wedding stars Nicole Kidman in a true powerhouse performance. Like another entry in this slideshow, the movie sees Kidman’s character heading home for her sister’s wedding but, naturally, nothing seems able to go right.
Melancholia (2011)
This apocalyptic drama actually bases itself at a tumultuous wedding. Whether or not the couple ever actually gets to the nuptials is up to the viewer to find out, but the drama that unfolds at the ceremony and in the world outside the venue is hard to forget.
Rachel Getting Married (2008)
Jonathan Demme gave Anne Hathaway a huge career boost back when he cast her as the lead in Rachel Getting Married . It’s certainly not a pleasant film by any means, but the fact that it revolves entirely around the wedding of Hathaway’s character’s sister means that it belongs here in this slideshow.
The Godfather (1972)
Oh, you thought The Godfather was a mob movie? No, it’s actually a wedding movie. The entire plot of Francis Ford Coppola’s highly-praised gangster film revolves around Don Corleone’s daughter’s wedding.
The Graduate (1967)
Probably one of the most infamous weddings in film history, The Graduate stars Dustin Hoffman and Anne Bancroft in the story of a weird little love triangle that plagues a post-grad, an older woman, and her daughter. Plus, it proves a wedding can still look good even if everything goes wrong.
The Princess Bride (1987)
On a mission to rescue his one true love, The Princess Bride sees a bit of holy matrimony in one of the most beautiful sequences imaginable. Rob Reiner is obviously an incredible director, so it’s not surprising to see him capture something so stunning.
Kill Bill Vol. 2 (2004)
Speaking of everything going wrong at a wedding, Quentin Tarantino’s second installment in the Kill Bill saga features one of the messiest ceremonies imaginable. Uma Thurman is nothing short of thrilling here as The Bride.
