Equal parts Little Miss Sunshine and Adventureland, Fox Searchlight’s The Way, Way Back marks the directing debut of Nat Faxon and Jim Rash, the Oscar-winning writing team behind Alexander Payne’s The Descendants.
Starring Steve Carell, Toni Collette, Allison Janney, AnnaSophia Robb, Sam Rockwell, Maya Rudolph and Liam James, Amanda Peet and Rob Corddry, The Way, Way Back follows 14-year old Duncan (James) on a family vacation with his mother (Collette) and her boyfriend (Carell). Uncomfortable with himself and the situation, Duncan finds a place that starts to feel right working at a water park alongside a man named Owen (Rockwell) who, along with his band of water park misfits, helps Duncan discover the person he wants to be.
ComingSoon.net sat down with Faxon and Rash and their ensemble cast to discuss the lighthearted and nostalgic approach to a coming-of-age tale that balances drama and comedy in equal measure. Check out the interviews in the player below and catch The Way, Way Back in theaters on July 5.
