The Disney Plus Hotstar movie intrigued audiences with its unconventional storyline and unexpected twists. T-Series Films, Colour Yellow Productions, and Cape of Good Films produce Atrangi Re. The film features Dhanush, Sara Ali Khan, and Akshay Kumar.
The narrative revolves around Rinku, who loves a magician named Sajjad but is coerced into marrying Dr. Vishu. As Vishu develops feelings for Rinku, the situation grows more complex with Sajjad’s unexpected return. This adds a twist to the love triangle. Viewers were left pondering over the complex love triangle as the credits rolled.
Why did Rinku’s relatives try to get her married?
Atrangi Re unfolds with Rinku Suryavanshi attempting to flee from her family’s clutches at Siwan Junction railway station. She is trying to elope with her beloved boyfriend. However, her plans are thwarted as she is apprehended and mistreated by her grandmother, Dulhayen. In a bid to relieve themselves of Rinku’s defiance, her relatives resort to desperate measures. They start pushing her into a hasty marriage with any eligible bachelor.
Meanwhile, S. Venkatesh Vishwanath “Vishu” Iyer, a Tamilian doctor, briefly visits Siwan. Accompanied by his friend Madhusudan, “MS” is inadvertently embroiled in a mix-up. Mistaken for MS, Vishu is drugged and coerced into marriage by Rinku’s uncles. Together, the reluctant newlyweds embark on a journey to New Delhi. However, both have their own heartaches. Vishu is already committed to his fiancée, Mandy, and Rinku is pining for her magician beau, Sajjad Ali Khan.
As their train journey progresses, Vishu and Rinku discover each other’s predicaments and form an unlikely bond. Rinku confides in Vishu about her tragic past, revealing how her grandmother killed her parents. Their journey takes a tumultuous turn when they arrive in Madurai for Vishu’s impending wedding. However, Mandy breaks off the wedding after realizing Vishu is already married to Rinku.
Fueled by a mixture of anger and sorrow, Vishu returns to Delhi with Rinku. Soon after, he realizes that his feelings for her have transformed into something deeper. However, their reunion is marred by the arrival of Sajjad, prompting Rinku to rush to him impulsively. Vishu, torn between his love for Rinku and his concern for her well-being, sends MS to ensure her safety. In a shocking revelation, it emerges that Sajjad exists only in Rinku’s imagination, a manifestation of her mental illness.
What did MS realize about Sajjad?
Perplexed by the situation, MS speculates that Sajjad might be a figure from Rinku’s past. This is what is causing her inner conflict as her budding affection for Vishu stirs guilt within her, considering her longstanding affection for Sajjad. MS rushes to Vishu, who is attending to a patient in the operation theatre, and shares his concerns about Sajjad. They decide to locate Rinku together. Encountering Rinku aboard a train, Vishu halts her departure by mentioning his intention to initiate divorce proceedings before parting ways. He hastily surmises that the romantic tale Rinku recounted might pertain to her parents.
Vishu and MS devise a strategy to administer medication to Rinku, aiming to diminish Sajjad’s presence. MS believes that Rinku’s improvement would weaken Sajjad’s influence. One evening, inebriated, Rinku impulsively kisses Vishu on the cheek, prompting Sajjad to confront her about what distinguishes Vishu. In a fit of anger, Vishu responds by recklessly injuring himself, leading to an urgent trip to the emergency room. As a way of apology, Sajjad promises to make the Taj Mahal vanish. Vishu and his friends gather a crowd for the trick, but just as Sajjad is about to perform, MS gives Rinku her meds. Rinku sees that the magic isn’t real. Later, she wonders why everyone applauded when nothing happened to the Taj Mahal. Annoyed, Vishu tells her he loves her and pledges to support her as her husband.
The following day, during divorce proceedings, Rinku surprises everyone by refusing to proceed. She expresses her desire to be with both Sajjad and Vishu. Vishu escorts her to Delhi Junction railway station to bid farewell to Sajjad. He assures Rinku that he will await her decision at the station.
Atrangi Re ending: What was Sajjad’s story?
At the train station, Rinku sees Sajjad with a little girl he claims is her as a child. He tells her to go to Vishu, her true love, and that he won’t come back this time. Rinku becomes upset, remembering her childhood. Later, a flashback reveals that Sajjad is actually her father. He ran away with her mother, got married, and had Rinku. But their happiness was cut short when the Suryavanshis intervened, leading to Sajjad’s arrest and their forced return home. After his release, Sajjad joined a circus, where he and Manjari would secretly meet with Rinku.
Tragedy struck during one of Sajjad’s performances when the Suryavanshis sabotaged it. They caused a fire that killed both Sajjad and Manjari in front of Rinku. This traumatic event shaped Rinku’s imagination, leading her to hold onto memories of her father as she grew up. Vishu and MS further realized this and played along. When Sajjad disappeared, Rinku returned to Vishu, who joyfully shared the news of his wife’s return with others. They reconciled, with Vishu carrying Rinku, reminiscent of how Sajjad used to carry her when she was young.
