Sriram Raghavan of Andhadhun fame has done it again thrillingly with his latest movie, Merry Christmas. Katrina Kaif and Vijay Sethupathi’s movie has a unique blend of Hitchcock-esque vibe, jazzy tracks, subtle hints, and romance. With the first half moving as slowly as a Christmas morning, the second half will have the viewers on the edge of their seats. By the end, the audience will be shocked to understand what really happened in a matter of minutes. A line in the movie aptly encapsulates its premise, “A night when lovers lose their hearts.”
So, let’s dive deep into the events that transpired in the latest thriller movie—what happened on Christmas Eve? Did Maria kill Jerome, or did Albert kill him?
What happened in Katrina Kaif & Vijay Sethupathi’s latest movie?
Returning after seven years, Albert (Vijay Sethupathi) stumbles upon Maria (Katrina Kaif) and her daughter Annie. Unbeknownst to Albert, he becomes entangled in a web of deception and tragedy as he involves himself in Maria’s life. Soon after, viewers witness the unfolding of a dark and intricate tale.
Albert, seemingly innocent, discovers Maria’s distress after being stood up. He chooses to follow her wherever she is going next, as he seems interested in her during their first interaction. They form an unsaid bond during a movie screening.
Furthermore, he asks if he could drop her and the kid at their home. He also discovers she has a husband, Jerome, who is having an affair. Maria reveals he is abusive and has suspicions about their daughter’s patronage. Moreover, since one of his abuses, her daughter stopped speaking.
The duo enjoys drinks and dances their heart out before leaving the house to “relive their past.” After a romantic stroll, they come back to discover Jerome lying dead with a gun in his hand, seemingly making it look like a suicide. However, later on, viewers learn that’s not the case.
Merry Christmas ending: Who killed Jerome?
Maria, a victim of the abuse, had meticulously planned to escape her torment. Her plan involved creating a replica of her apartment just a floor down below to frame an innocent man as an alibi during Jerome’s tragic end.
Unwittingly drawn into Maria’s dark scheme, Albert becomes a crucial player in her desperate attempt to rewrite her destiny. Maria’s desperation becomes palpable as she shields her daughter and orchestrates a complex alibi to divert suspicion. Thus, she killed Jerome.
Albert, with a shocking murder confession from his past for which he was in jail for seven years, adds complexity to the story. Struggling with guilt and desire for redemption, he forms an unlikely alliance with Maria. After his confession, she found another innocent person, Ronnie, to be her alibi.
As the police investigation intensifies, Albert becomes Maria’s unexpected savior, guiding her through the process of destroying evidence. With no suspicious statements from everyone involved, the police were going to shut the case.
However, their plan takes an unexpected turn. Ronnie had planted a wallet (evidence) in between the sofa. But when he searched for it when the pair came back, it wasn’t there. He suspected that whoever stole the wallet must have killed Jerome to avoid a robbery witness.
However, Albert was seen carrying the wallet in order to drop it in Church’s lost & found box. He knew if the police inquiry was prolonged, they might find out Maria killed Jerome. So, in an unexpected turn of events, he shows the wallet to the police officer and also takes out a ring from his past, indicating he stole the same from Maria’s house.
In a poignant moment, instead of grabbing it, Maria offers her hand so he could put the ring on her ring finger. The movie ends with him smiling on a bench and waiting for what ensues.
Merry Christmas is currently playing in nearby theaters. It will soon be released on Netflix.
